Typography in editorial design is not decoration. It is structure. The scale relationships between a 120px display headline, a 32px subhead, and a 16px body paragraph define the entire spatial logic of the page — before any image or colour has been introduced.
The Scale-First Hierarchy
We build typographic systems from the top down. The display size is set first, chosen not for elegance but for architectural impact. From that anchor, all other sizes are derived as rational proportions: roughly 0.67× for the next level, 0.5× for the level below that. This gives the system an internal logic that the reader feels even when they cannot articulate it.
120px at the top creates permission for everything below it. Reduce the display size and the entire hierarchy loses its authority.
Tracking and Meaning
Letter-spacing carries semantic weight. Tightly tracked display type (-0.04em) reads as confident, architectural, editorial. Widely tracked uppercase at 0.1em reads as categorical — useful for labels and metadata that need to announce their own insignificance. These are not arbitrary preferences. They are conventions established through a century of print media, and violating them registers as noise.
A typeface is not a style. It is a decision about what kind of structure you are building. Choose accordingly.
